That seems like a really cool program, especially if you are looking to create a gif from your favourite TV show, or something.
What are you wanting to do with the program, though? Because you could always pause the movie or video you are trying to cap from and press control+shift+4, this brings up a box which makes a cap of only the parts of the image that are selected, and conveniently saves it to your desktop.
I understand if you are trying something a little more complex, though, that this would be a tedious and inappropriate way of going about it. :)

I agree, it's very annoying, and seems to be one of the Finder's long-standing bugs. I use column view exclusively and still get annoyed when new windows open in another view, such as when viewing an app's package contents.
You might want to try opening a new Finder window and setting it how you like, then closing it and opening another. This has sometimes worked for me in the past.
One way I found to not so much get around the problem but get new windows opening how I like is by using scripts. Here's one I amended from an article originally on MacOSXHints.com way back in 2001. It opens two finder windows, one above thew other in column view, and is designed for a 1024 x 768 resolution screen. It's pretty easy to follow so you should be able to tinker with it to get it exactly how you want it (and remember to change the 'set target...' lines to reflect your user account and what you want the Finder to display).
tell application "Finder"
activate
close every window
-- Bottom Window
set this_window to make new Finder window
-- display external firwire hard disk if mounted
if disk "X Files" exists then
set target of this_window to "X Files:Archive"
else
set target of this_window to "HD:Applications"
end if
set bounds of this_window to {86, 364, 818, 762}
set current view of this_window to column view
-- Top Window
set this_window to make new Finder window
set target of this_window to "HD:Users:db"
set bounds of this_window to {86, 97, 818, 279}
set current view of this_window to column view
end tell

Site looks ok but seems more aimed at a young professional than someone wanting to out tech there kids.
Optimise your images and JavaScript the page is very slow.
Even just a quick save to web from Photoshop CS5 on header_ip.png took it from 332KB to 33KB with no visible quality reduction. Other images are also large in file size for what they are that could do with improvement.
The page is also making far to many requests for my liking, once again optimise by combining images ether into composites, sprites(for nav. Better still replace with css styling.), and combine your JavaScripts into one minified file.

i haven't tried this yet, but if it's true, i'm basically the happiest person ever.
I just confirmed with my Beethoven Symphony 5 3rd to 4th movement gapless playback works. I had already ripped my CD as Apple lossless. I did not have to rerip it. The first time iTunes ran, it analyzed my music for gapless playback. Great!!

I've been following 256gb SSD prices for a while, and I've seen hardly any movement.
Also, I know shortly before the end of there was a lot of chatter about Intel's entry into the market and how prices would soon go down.
From what I've seen, none of that has materialized.
Does anyone have any ideas or insights about this? I'm personally only concerned w/ drives around 220gb and up.
Of course, my motivation to write this is that I'm dying to buy one but have been trying to hold out... :) Can't hold on much longer...
thanks much

I remember when the originals came out. I worked for Circuit City at the time and they had a 100% return rate. (Granted we only sold 3 before I left there but still).
The originals had the WORST colors (pepto pink, diarrea, and milk) Those were the colors. There was supposedly a black one floating around but our store never got it.

Plug in the external FireWire drive and pop in your system restore disc. Restore to the external drive, and when it asks if you want to copy yoru files and settings from another Mac OS X installtion, tell it yes. One of the options is to migrate from "another partition on the same computer." It'll copy over all your files, applications, user settings...everything.
That, or you could go the CCC route. Whichever.

Using the jailbreak tool 'SAM' it is possible to backup the authorization token iTunes exchanges with Apple for the unlock. You should be able to back up the activation (unlocked) and never have to worry again. Even if Apple comes back and revokes it, you will be able to swap in the token which allows it.

iMovie probably isn't the best choice for this. Because the movie file is already 'mixed down' it's hard to separate sounds, but it might be possible to minimise the unwanted sounds
If you can get the audio into an audio editing programme like Audigy or Logic I have the following thoughts:
1 - Stereo separation
Was the video recorded in stereo and where the people standing on opposite sides of the shot? If so you might find less of the unwanted voice in the left or right channel. You could therefore pan completely left at the point of the offending crossover, then bounce the audio file as a mono file.
2 - Tone / Frequency
Are the voices different in tone? By using a very narrow parametric eq you may be able to dial out the words by reducing the gain on the frequencies of the unwanted voice. In MS Logic the EQ facility has a function which allows you to see the frequencies of an audio file graphically.
3 - Relative volumes
Is the unwanted voice quieter? If so a noise reduction plugin might work to reduce the unwanted voice further.
4 - Repeated words?
Is the problem word said somewhere else by the speaker? If so you might be able to cut and paste the word from another part of his speech over the unwanted interruption
5 - Generally removing the other voice
Where they are not overlapping it will be easier to remove the other voice, just use the audio editor's tools to silence the audio file when the other person is talking
Once you've done all your audio editing you'll need to bounce and export the audio file then drop it back into iMovie, silencing the original sountrack.
Free tools you can use for all of this include Quicktime for separating the audio file, Audigy (for audio editing), or ideally Logic.

So on the cnn home page right now, is an add for a razor, but its actually three separate .swf files. In the pic - 1, 2 and 3. If you click swing in 1, the guy hits the golf ball, it flies through 2 and lands in 3.
So does anyone know how they're sending the info to the different .swf files to have it trigger the correct scene in the right order?
Thanks,
D

easiest way is to bounce the klopgeist click onto its own AUDIO track then cut and mute it when you want it to drop out.
or use a midi click and simply stop looping it at the point you want it to stop.

There was some good speculation going on at the PreNAB Editor's Lounge. Mark Raudonis was one of the few that got to see the new FCP at Apple recently.

Of course he couldn't say much due to the NDA. I'm still excited to see what the big changes are, but I'm not very optimistic after watching this. Luckily we're likely only a few days away from finding out for sure.

Not surprising with the price and 11.6" model. The MBA would sit mostly untouched at the Apple store. Now people are constantly using them especially the 11.6" model.

Can we get an article on these research companies/analysts? I seriously have no idea who they are, why they dod what they do, and how they make their money. Seems like we could all be getting played just to cause the market to fluctuate so some rich arseholes can increase their ridiculously huge coffers only to work the system so they don't have to pay any taxes.
Wow, sorry for the jaded rant. Tax day makes me grumpy.
But seriously, a spotlight on these "experts" who are quotes for frequently and drive the tech blogs into a feeding frenzy would be welcome.

Going from 2mb Ram to 4mb Ram is only $100. VERY much worth it in my opinion. The CPU upgrade is more debatable. And I'd go for 256gb on the SDD (128gb is a bit limited for today's standards if you plan on storing music and video).
